The fabric stores and suppliers are very helpful. Before
calling, have an idea in mind of the type of fabric you are looking for. Many of these
stores are happy to send fabric samples. However, be as specific as you can. Ask yourself
the following questions:
What specific use do I expect of my finished garment?
Example: Coat, shirt, dress, suit.
What notions do I need? Some stores offer interfacing,
thread, patterns, buttons, lining, etc.
What alternative fabrics are acceptable? If I ask for wool,
would a blend of wool/polyester be just as acceptable?
What dollar amount would I consider affordable?
How many yards do I need of a specific width of fabric?
How do I want this fabric shipped?
What method of payment do I want to use? C.O.D. is rarely
offered for cut yardage.
Lace is usually made with a repeat pattern of several
inches and may be difficult and expensive for the retail store to swatch for you. Describe
the type of lace you wish to find and, if possible, find a photo of the lace to send to
the retail store. Fabric stores are willing to photocopy the lace rather than cut off a
sample to send.
Remember, these stores offer "mail order" as a
convenience to you. Their customer service is usually very good. However, as with most
fabric stores, they may not give you refunds on cut yardage. Be sure to read their return policy.
Since we can not control the way others do business, we
do not offer any warranty or guarantee for fabric suppliers.
