Silk Chiffon pronounced [shi-fon] is a sheer fabric and has lightness and delicacy. Silk Chiffon has better drape than chiffon fabrics made from synthetic or man-made fibers thus garment designs that are loose and flowing work best in this fabric.
Silk fibers are able to absorb about 11 percent of their weight in moisture. Silk fibers do not shrink when washed, however as the silk fibers are spun into yarn and then woven into cloth, they may be stretched. Washing silk fabric brings the silk fibers back to their original length which gives the impression that the fabric “shrinks” when washed.
Although silk fibers do not conduct heat, silk garments are cooler in the summer in part because silk is strong enough to be spun into fine yarns allowing heat and air to pass through the fabric. Since silk fibers are smooth dirt doesn’t gather in silk fabric. Silk fibers are slightly weaker when wet so excessive agitation is not recommended when cleaning or washing this fabric. Strong bleaches such as chlorine bleaches will also damage silk. Mild bleaches such as hydrogen peroxide can be used sparingly. Again, remember that silk is a protein fiber like your hair so use products on your silk that you would use on your hair.
Silk fibers are damaged by perspiration thus garments should be washed or dry cleaned after each wearing when perspiration shields aren’t worn.
When cutting out patterns using silk chiffon, use tissue paper underneath the chiffon for stability of the pattern pieces. When sewing Silk Chiffon, using tissue paper over and under the seam helps stabilize the seam, then tear away the tissue paper at the stitching. French seams are recommended.
Using a straight stitch throat plate on the sewing machine is recommended. Sharp Sewing Machine needles in a small size is recommended. Always use a new sewing machine needle when sewing silk.
Our Silk Chiffon is light weight but very strong with a soft finish. Beautiful when used in scarves, skirt overlays, sheer blouses and evening dresses.
